    Mandolin Tabs!!!

Hey all, I've got 2 tabs for 2 mumford songs on mandolin that are either very close or spot on.

Let me know what you think (if you have a mando that is, heh)

    Winter Winds -

Standard Mandolin Tuning (7th fret guitar)
    ......G...........D.........Em.........C
    E|----3--------2--------0--------0---------------------------------------------|
    A|----2--------0---------2--------3--------------------------------------------|
    D|----0--------0--------5--------2---------------------------------------------|
    G|----0--------2--------4--------0---------------------------------------------|

    G.......................D................Em.........................C..........
As the winter winds litter london with lonely hearts
    G....................................D.........................Em...................C..........
Oh the warmth in your eyes swept me into to your arms
    G.......................................D................Em.........................C..........
Was it love or fear of the cold that led us through the night
    G.......................D................Em...................C..........
For every kiss your beauty trumped my doubt...

    C......................G......................C......G........D........
And my head told my heart, let - love - grow~
    C......................G......................C......G........D........................G
But my heart, told me head, this - time - no~, this time no

And then repeat for next few verse's and chorus.

    The Banjolin Song -

    Standard Mandolin Tuning
    ......G...........D.........Em.........C
    E|----3--------2--------0--------0---------------------------------------------|
    A|----2--------0---------2--------3--------------------------------------------|
    D|----0--------0--------5--------2---------------------------------------------|
    G|----0--------2--------4--------0---------------------------------------------|

It is the same chords used in Winter Winds just in a different order!

    Verse-

    G......................C...............D...............G
She stole my heart and made me sing
    G...................C..................D...............G
She tore me limb from limb
    G............C...............D............G
I did not think that I could love
    G..........................C......D...............
Or be loved that way again

    Chrous -

    D.......G.......C.............G...........
    Agai~an~aaaah~aain
    D.......G.......C.............G...........G
    Agai~an~aaaah~aain

    Bridge -

    C......................Em.....D....G
My eyes shall see, light again
    C..............................Em..........D.....G
And my heart shall bleed, right again.............2x

Keep my eyes to serve and hands to learn.

    Re: Mandolin Tabs!!!

Thanks so much for these! I just got a mandolin a few weeks ago, so I'm still quite new to it (I've never played a string instrument before). The chords sound great, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the strumming and rhythm. What is the picking pattern for these? Is it straight down, like 4-3-2-1, or is there a different order? And I'm assuming the best way to get the rhythm down is to just watch/listen to the songs as often as I can?

I'm sorry if these questions seem silly or obvious, but I would definitely appreciate any advice!

    Re: Mandolin Tabs!!!

No, not silly what so ever...  The strumming patterns can vary by shows. I've gotten them down by fiddling around, and loads of practice. You can mostly improvise really, I tend to strum very fast Up and Down, leaving gaps between what I hit and it sort of sounds like what Marcus does. go one Youtube and watch their "Awake My Soul" video in France with Johnny Flynn, they also preform the Banjolin song there in a back alley. It is brilliant. You can learn alot from the small shows and it gave me some new ideas, I'll post the tabs for "Awake My Soul" on Mando soon!

Awake My Soul - Mumford and Sons Mandolin Tab

This tab is based off a video I will list below, where the guys are in France,
walking around town with fellow folk artist Johnny Flynn.
They sing some of the lyrics in French which I will also list.

It is in the 2nd half of this video, after the banjolin song!

    Chords Used:
    .........D...........G.........Em.......Bm.......A

How fickel my heart and how woozy my eyes
    D..................................G..................D
I struggle to find any truth in your lies
    D.......................................................G....................D
And now my heart stumbles on things I don't know
    D............................................G.........D

    Re: Mandolin Tabs!!!

What a wonderful video! I wish I could have been there for that. The Banjolin Song is probably one of my top 3 favorites by M&S, and I really want to be able to play it eventually.

I really appreciate all of these tabs (and the video for more reference). I'm sure I'd benefit from any others that you feel like sharing!

    Re: Mandolin Tabs!!!

    The Banjolin Song -

    Standard Mandolin Tuning

Actually this is the order of the chords for the verse but Marcus does not play the chords straight-up on the mandolin, he rides the G on the high E-string while walking down on the low G-string which follows the bass line.  I list the Chord names at the top but the mandolin part are actually variations on those chords, i.e. D is a Dsus4 for the mando part.
    ......G...........C.........Em.............D
    E|----3--------3--------3-----------3---------------------------------------------|
    A|----2--------2---------2-----------0--------------------------------------------|
    D|----0--------0--------0-----------0---------------------------------------------|
    G|----0--------5--------4-----------2---------------------------------------------|

     Verse-

    G........C............Em.............D
She stole my heart and made me....
    G...............C............Em.............D
sing She tore me limb from limb
    G........C............Em.............D
I did not     think that   I could...
    G................C................Em......D.........
love Or be loved that way again

Chrous -  This chord progression is right.  Marcus uses the following chord structures:

     .......D...........G.........C.............D
    E|----2--------3--------0-----------3---------------------------------------------|
    A|----0--------2---------3-----------2--------------------------------------------|
    D|----0--------0--------2-----------0---------------------------------------------|
    G|----2--------0--------0-----------0--------------------------------------------|

     D.......G.......C.............G...........
    Agai~an~aaaah~aain
    D.......G.......C.............G...........G
    Agai~an~aaaah~aain

Bridge -  This is incorrect.  The general chord progression is:  Am   G   Em7   G.  Here's how Marcus plays it:

     .......Am........G.........Em7..........G
    E|----5--------3--------3-----------3---------------------------------------------|
    A|----3--------2---------0-----------2--------------------------------------------|
    D|----2--------0--------2-----------0---------------------------------------------|
    G|----2--------0--------0-----------0--------------------------------------------|

    ......Am..............G.....Em7....G
My eyes shall see, light again
    ..............Am..............G..........Em7....G
And my heart shall bleed, right again.............2x

Winter winds is correct on the chord progression but  Ibelieve Marcus plays the Em in this song as follows:

    ........Em..
    E|----3----l
    A|----2----l
    D|----2---l
    G|----4---l

just bar the 2nd fret with index finger, middle on the 3rd fret of E string, ring finger on 4th fret of G string

And see the world hanging upside down
    C#m
    You can understand dependence

    So make your siren's call
    E A E
    And sing all you want
    A E B

    C#m A E
And I will change my ways
    A E B
I'll know my name as it's called again

    Re: Mandolin Tabs!!!

Thanks for this, your tabs have helped me learn a lot this summer. My main project so far has been Winter Winds. For anyone (like me) who has had trouble with the strumming, I found someone playing a cover of it online and it's pretty clear to hear/see the strumming pattern. This helped me a lot.

Can't wait to work on The Cave!

Also, from messing around a bit, I learned what (to me) sounds like the opening notes of Home, their new song. Could you let me know, if you've listened to it, how you would play the intro and I can see if I'm on the right track?

    Re: Mandolin Tabs!!!

It is incredible how fast these great new songs continue to pop up at live shows every few weeks.
No i've not learned or even heard the song "Home" until you brought it up and for that I thank you!

I will get to work on tabbing it if possible on guitar and then on mandolin. I am currently working on putting up tabs for "Hopeless Wanderer", "Below My Feet" and "...
well i cant begin to finish my sentence as I am enchanted by "Home" playing in the background... (:

I'm not sure if you got my comment on your youtube video. Brilliant stuff. I am more than willing to collaberate with you! I play
guitar/bass/banjo/mandolin/piano/percussion and I can sing lead/tenor/bass, they are all in my range.

I feel compelled to ask if anybody saw the VH1 special a few weeks back? Lovely cover of the National's "England". It fit beautifully in their setlist.

I'm off to play some music and tab some music so, cheers and keep up the good work all!

Oh, unfortunately that wasn't me, that was a video I found that helped me learn how to strum. I'm not quite at that guy's level yet, but I do agree he did a very good job!

Glad you like Home! It's a great new song, and I agree that England was a beautiful cover. I've been listening to it quite often over the past few days, actually.
